Aero Engine Round Table "Electrification in Propulsion"

The NAG (in close cooperation with the DGTA) organises an Aero Engine Round Table on Wednesday May 30th from 13:00 – 17:00 hrs at the National Aerospace Centre (NLR) in Marknesse with the theme “Electrification in Propulsion”.

Background
Electrification of flight has made its entry a number of decades ago via the introduction of electronic instruments in the cockpit and throughout the airframe with the advent of mechatronics, thus enabling fly-by-wire aircraft operations. However, the aero engine of today is still based on the burning of fossil fuel under high pressure in order to get an aircraft airborne and moving forward. In view of the stringent environmental targets set by the 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Control and the continued growth of air travel, it is necessary to develop new directions for aviation through electric power.

Purpose
The purpose of the “Electrification in Propulsion” Round Table is to provide an overview of the key areas for future innovation in relation to optimising the current gas turbine, increased integration between airframe and engine, and the current & future initiatives in electrification of propulsion such as battery electric and hybrid electric. Furthermore, attention will be given to a propulsor demonstrator currently under consideration by GKN-Fokker and NLR to be developed as a proof of concept for which participation by other Dutch parties is being sought.

Presentations
Starting off with an introductory presentation by Martin Nagelsmit from NLR, the following key-note speakers are providing presentations based on their company’s experience:

  • Martin Nagelsmit (NLR)
  • Simon Taylor (GKN Aerospace – Chief Engineer) = “Feasibility Study – HE Centreline Propulsor Demonstrator”

During the round table discussion following the key-note presentations the following questions will be addressed:

  • what are the current technological challenges facing electrification of propulsion?
  • which initiatives / scenarios hold the best promise becoming reality in the next 10 years?
  • what technology developments are required to allow battery-electric and / or hybrid-electric powered aircraft to really take off?
  • how can Dutch companies become involved in the development of a propulsor demonstrator?

Guided Tour
NLR provides you with the opportunity to participate in a guided tour of the DNW wind tunnel facilities, one of Europe’s most advanced & specialised organisations for wind tunnel testing.

Your response
There are limited seats available so check out your agenda and inform Wilma Pronk via email (wilma.pronk@nag.aero) or phone: +31 (0) 88 1976 103 if you are interested in participating in this Aero Engine Round Table on Wednesday, May 30th from 13:00 h to 17:00 h.

There is no participation fee for this Aero Engine Round Table. This event is made possible by a topsector HTSM TKI grant.
