Canada has a strong aviation industry with a similar heritage to The Netherlands. There are numerous examples of collaborations between our two nations. Our assessment is that there is also a very good cultural fit, which helps for developing business.
The advancement of sustainable aviation will create new situations for airports on a global scale and we expect Canada will be an early adopter to these new technologies, meaning infrastructure investment in airports, application of smaller aircraft (electric/hydrogen) from a national perspective, plus a variety of OEM positions for leading to new programme(s) development.
Both nations governments are committed to stimulate sustainable aviation with €383m being assigned to LiT and recently Canada announcing a similar programme $CAN 350m (€238m). Additionally, Economic Affairs via the TSH subsidy has opened the door to enable our companies to include collaboration with Canadian counterparts in projects relating to sustainable aviation.
In Canada, on the OEM side, Bombardier’s focusing on business Jets with their aircraft programmes being sold to Airbus, Mitsubishi and De Havilland, which led to a repositioning with new strategies to be developed by each of the entities. We believe this will lead in the near term to interesting new programmes in the business jet and regional aircraft markets. OEMs in Canada also include: engine, systems and simulation/training.
For the further eco system large scale investments ($can 962.2m/597m EUR) are being made in the Canadian research laboratories and we see opportunities to connect our universities for Human Capital and talent development.
There is also strong interest between The Netherlands and Canada regarding alternative fuels as evidenced by the MoU regarding hydrogen supply between the nations.
With the above transitions happening in Canada, it is always better to be an early proactive collaborator than a reactive supplier once concrete programmes and business opportunities have been announced.
Therefore, we would like to inventorize members interest to explore deepening the collaboration of the Netherlands aviation industry with Canada, upon which we will develop a proposition for further investigation and preparing a plan.
