NAG Airport development event at Lelystad airport: a day of innovation and collaboration

 

On Thursday, 6 February, the NAG Airport Development event took place at Lelystad Airport. The event aimed to foster collaboration and interaction among (smaller) airports to stimulate innovation and sustainability. A wide range of participants from various companies and universities attended, creating a diverse and engaging atmosphere.

Opening and Presentations
The afternoon began with a warm welcome and opening remarks by Werner van Eck, CEO of MEP.

This set the stage for the event, which included three presentations by prominent industry figures:

-Sustainable Energy Infrastructure Developments at Lelystad Airport
Presented by Sander Mulder, Manager of Sustainability & Innovation at Lelystad Airport, this session provided insights into the airport’s sustainable energy initiatives and future plans.

-RHIA: Cleaner, Quieter and Smarter Aviation
Elise Bavelaar, a member of the RHIA Executive Board and Innovation & Project Manager for Airports at TU Delft, and Cornelia Bom, also a member of the RHIA Executive Board and Energy Transition Adviser at Shell Nederland B.V., shared their vision for cleaner, quieter, and smarter aviation. They highlighted the critical role of RHIA in driving these developments.

-DutcH₂ Aviation Hub
Marlies Hak, Innovator at Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTHA), presented on the DutcH₂ Aviation Hub project, discussing the opportunities and challenges of hydrogen in the aviation sector.

 

Panel Discussion
The event continued with a lively panel discussion moderated by Werner van Eck. This open Q&A session delved into some of the most pressing topics in the industry, including:

-Sustainability in flight and airport operations

-Collaboration opportunities for smaller airports

-Innovations in airport infrastructure and future development standards

-Projects like GOLIAT that promote better collaboration between airports and aircraft developers

The interactive nature of the panel fostered insightful discussions and new perspectives on how airports can work together to achieve shared goals.

The day concluded with a guided tour of Lelystad Airport, offering participants a unique chance to experience the airport in its quiet, empty state—a rare opportunity to explore its infrastructure up close.
